How to Make Quick, Authentic-Tasting Pho Broth at Home

Material

  • 2 large onions, peeled and quartered.
  • 1 piece of ginger (10 cm), peeled and split lengthwise.
  • 2 cinnamon sticks (7 cm).
  • 2 star anise.
  • 3 cloves.
  • 2 tsp coriander seeds.
  • 6 cups low sodium beef broth.
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce or tamari.
  • 1 tbsp fish sauce.
  • 3 medium carrots, peeled and roughly chopped.

How to Make Pho Broth

  1. Grill the onions and ginger. Place the onion and ginger over direct heat or roast in the oven until lightly charred. This process will provide a distinctive aroma that enriches the taste of the soup.
  2. Roast spices. Heat the cinnamon, star anise, cloves and coriander seeds in a frying pan without oil for 1–2 minutes until fragrant.
  3. Prepare broth. Place the roasted onions, ginger, spices, carrots, soy sauce, fish sauce, and beef stock in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and cook slowly for 30 minutes.
  4. Strain the stock. Once cooked, strain the stock to separate solid ingredients and spices. You will get a clear sauce with a rich aroma of spices.
  5. Serve. Use this broth to make Pho by adding rice noodles, thinly sliced ​​beef, and a variety of fresh toppings such as bean sprouts, cilantro, and lime juice.
