How to make pho for beginners

  1. Prepare aromatics. Roast the onions and ginger over a fire or in the oven until lightly charred. This will enhance the aroma of the soup.
  2. Roast spices. Heat the cinnamon, star anise, cloves and coriander in a frying pan without oil for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  3. Make gravy. Place the onions, ginger, roasted spices, carrots, soy sauce, fish sauce and beef stock in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and cook for 30 minutes.
  4. Cook noodles. Boil the rice noodles according to the instructions on the package, drain, then rinse with cold water to prevent sticking.
  5. Strain the soup. After 30 minutes, strain the soup to separate the solid ingredients, so the soup is clear and rich in flavor.
  6. Assemble the Pho bowls. Place the noodles in a serving bowl, add the sliced raw beef, then pour the hot sauce over the top. The heat of the sauce will cook the meat naturally.
  7. Add toppings. Serve with bean sprouts, coriander leaves, chili slices and lime juice to enhance the taste.
