What is Brotowali?
Brotowali is a herbal plant that has long been known in Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, as a traditional medicine with various health benefits.
This plant belongs to the Menispermaceae family and has the scientific name Tinospora crispa. In local language, brotowali is also known as andawali (Sundanese), antawali (Bali), or shen jin teng (Chinese).
The brotowali plant grows vines and can reach a length of up to 2.5 meters or more. The stems are small, about the size of a little finger, have nodules, and have a very bitter taste.
The leaves are heart-shaped and about 7–12 cm long. Brotowali grows wild in tropical areas such as open forests or bushes, and is often planted in home gardens as a medicinal plant.
Traditionally, brotowali stem parts are often used because they are rich in active compounds such as tinocryspid, picrotoxin and several alkaloids.
These compounds have antimalarial, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic and stamina enhancing properties. Brotowali is also used to treat rheumatism, fever, diabetes, and skin treatments such as scabies and wounds.
Because of its versatile nature, brotowali is one of the favorite herbs in traditional medicine in Indonesia.
