KOMPAS.com – A number of black plastic cooking utensils sold in the United States (US) contain chemicals that are harmful to health, according to a new study in the journal Chemosphere.
Carried out by scientists from Toxic-Free Future and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the study found the presence of flame retardant chemicals (flame retardants) in a variety of household products made from black plastic, including tableware, kitchen utensils and toys.

“A number of companies continue to use toxic flame retardants in electronic devices, causing unexpected and unnecessary toxic exposure,” he said co-author the study and policy manager in Toxic-Free Future, Megan Liu, quoted from the official broadcast, Monday (4/11/2024).
Liu continued, initially these chemicals should not have been used. However, due to the process recycle (recycling), these materials enter the environment and people’s homes in various ways.

“The high levels (of flame retardant chemicals) that we found are quite worrying,” Liu said.
Meanwhile, Ronie-Richele Garcia-Johnson Distinguished Professor at Duke University in North Carolina, USA, Heather Stapleton said that the results of the study showed that electronic devices containing flame retardants were recycled into food containers and cutlery.
As for these fire retardants, one of them can be found at casing The outer (casing) of the television is large.
“While it is important to develop sustainable approaches when dealing with the plastic waste stream, we must be careful and ensure that we do not contribute to additional exposure to these dangerous chemicals in recycled materials,” explains Stapleton.
