Homemade chili oil recipe
Material
- 3 tbsp crushed dried chilies
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 star anise flower
- 1 tsp Sichuan peppercorns, crushed (can be substituted with black pepper if you don’t have any)
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1 cup neutral oil (such as peanut oil, vegetable oil, or canola oil)
How to make homemade chili oil
- Prepare all the ingredients and put the dried chilies, cinnamon, star anise, Sichuan peppercorns and garlic powder in a heatproof bowl.
- Heat the oil in a small saucepan over medium heat until it reaches a temperature of around 110-120 degrees Celsius, or when the chili flakes make a sizzling sound when added.
- Pour the hot oil into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Stir gently so that the spices are completely soaked, and leave to cool for about an hour.
- If you want a smooth texture, strain the oil to separate the dry spices. Transfer the chili oil into a clean glass jar or bottle.
- Store this homemade chili oil in the refrigerator for up to six months, or at room temperature for several weeks.
