Not abroad, this Wagyu Cattle Farm is in Lampung

KOMPAS.com – Not only overseas, Wagyu cattle farming can now also be found in Indonesia. To be precise, at the PT Santoso Agrindo (Santori) cattle farm, the location is in Lampung Province.

“We have been around for 15 years, (starting) from one head (cow) to now maybe tens of thousands of heads (cattle). The product produced is Wagyu beef, on average marbling-it’s at 80 to 85 percent,” said Head of Beef Commercial Tokusen, Sugiman during the Holycow’s Private Selection event at Japfa Experience, South Jakarta, Tuesday (29/10/2024).

The Director of PT Santoso Agrindo, Dayan Adiningrat, explained that the first trial of developing Wagyu cattle was by bringing cattle from Australia to Indonesia.

Seeing cattle that could adapt well to tropical environments, breeding was carried out. Starting from choosing cow feed for fattening, to slaughtering cows on the farm.

Dayan explained that the crossbreeding system used was crossing the genetics of female Wagyu cattle from Australia with the genetics of male cattle that are well adapted to tropical climates. For example with Brahman cows.

“In animal husbandry, things that always carry genetic characteristics are inherited from the father’s (male) line. So we crossed them with Wagyu females,” said Dayan, Tuesday.

He also ensures that the production process at the Tokusen farm is well controlled. Starting from the time of slaughter, when the cow was born, to who the cow’s mother is.

Different from Wagyu cattle abroad, the feed consumed by Wagyu cattle here comes from nutritious local feed, namely cassava.

As a result, the texture and marbling characteristics of the wagyu meat produced are smoother and have a unique taste.

This experiment with cassava as feed for wagyu cattle, said Dayan, was also carried out on wagyu cattle from Japan. As a result, the meat fat formed is whiter and shinier.

“We can ensure that there are no products that we do not protect, and most importantly, (wagyu cattle production in Tokusen) is halal,” he said.

Raising Wagyu cattle

Dayan said, there are at least three things you need to pay attention to when raising Wagyu cattle. First, namely genetics because meat marbling is created from the genetics of Wagyu cattle.

Second, namely the environment where Wagyu cattle live. Dayan said, the environment for Wagyu cattle must be clean and orderly so that the cattle are comfortable.

“In Lampung, every cage is given special treatment, (the temperature) is not too hot, it is given blower. So it’s for their comfort,” he said.

In fact, there is special treatment for cows, such as treating the cow’s hooves so that Wagyu cows can stand comfortably.

Third, namely the nutritional aspect of feed. As is done in Lampung, the feed given to Wagyu cattle is cassava.

“Wagyu cattle are different from other cattle, the cattle are fattened for at least one year,” he concluded.
