Batu Lado: The Key Of Minangkabau Culinary



MINANGPEDIA – West Sumatra is famous for its culinary delights which are rich in spices and spicy flavors. starting from Rendang which was named “the most delicious food in the world” by CNN in 2016, then there is beef jerky, curry tunjang, chicken pop and many more. But do you know the people behind the processing of spices and chilies, usually in restaurants or at home? stairs in West Sumatra still use traditional technology which is a spice grinder known by the Minang people as “batu lado”.

Lado stones continue to be used today, starting from the chili grinding industry in markets, restaurants and households. One of the unique features of Minang lado stones is that the grinders are round in shape, unlike those in other areas which are pointed.
