Every region on the Island of the Gods has its own special and unique culinary delights. One of them is Pidpid Village, Karangasem, which also has unique culinary delights made from Gayas.

Gayas are the larvae of beetles. Gayas is a pest that attacks the roots of plants.

One of the methods used by farmers in Pidpid Village to eradicate this pest is to look for it manually (hoeing and plowing). The Gayas obtained are processed into savory and delicious snacks or side dishes.

Where is Gayas Obtained?

Gayas is usually found right on the roots of plants that are yellow or dead. The way to find out is by looking at the condition of the plants that are wilted, yellow, or even dead even though the soil is fertile. To prove it, just dig a little, the style usually immediately appears.

The reproduction of Gayas is relatively fast because one Gayas can lay a large number of eggs every day. Gayas are divided into two types, namely small-medium called ‘samlung’ and large-sized called ‘gayas’.

Apart from being edible, style that has been cleaned of dirt can also be sold for IDR 60 thousand per kilogram.

Processed Types of Gayas

Gayas is usually processed into a delicious snack or side dish for the people of Pidpid Village and its surroundings.

Usually, this style is made into the dish ‘gayas nyat nyat/gayas coconut milk’ (fried and filled with coconut milk until thick). This food is usually available in Pidpid Village every rainy season or agricultural season. During the dry season, Gayas have moved to deeper places to incubate eggs and are not under plant roots.

For those who don’t know or have just seen this processed food, it might feel disgusting. Because the appearance of the style is quite scary and in fact it is a pest animal.

For the people of Pidpid Village and its surroundings, gayas is a delicious and nutritious food. Its savory and crunchy taste makes this food suitable for snacking with onion chili sauce and is often also used as a side dish.
