Sumedang Typical Bojongseungit Coffee Grown by PPN Middle School Students



Sumedang – Sumedang’s specialty Bojongseungit coffee, which has been around for decades, has a unique character. This coffee cultivation is studied specifically by PPN Vocational School students.

Coffee West Java is known internationally. Seeing the quite high market demand, one of the schools in Sumedang Regency, West Java included coffee cultivation in the curriculum.

Deputy Principal for Facilities and Infrastructure at SMK PPN Tanjungsari Supendi said, apart from learning through the established curriculum, the students also learned about coffee cultivation and they went straight into the field.

“Their learning place is in the garden, in this garden there is a hut which is used to provide material. After being given the material they go straight to the garden to learn to grow coffee,” said Supendi when met by detikcom at the garden. Bojongseungit Coffee which is at the Tanjungsari PPN Vocational School complex, Sumedang, Wednesday (3/10/2018).

Supendi said, the planting period coffee It’s best to do it right before the rainy season. However, because the weather cannot be predicted yet, the 10th grade or first grade students of Tanjungsari PPN Vocational School, Department of Plantation Plantation Agribusiness, will plant their first coffee in the middle of October.

“The planting schedule is mid-October, whether we have it or not, we don’t have to plant because it’s time. Meanwhile, we will use the well water source here to water the coffee plants later,” he said.

Not only planting, previously the students learned about seeding, seeding, weaning and making holes to plant the coffee. There are around 500 seeds that have now been prepared, which were planted by around 66 students, each planting 5 coffee plants.

“The coffee will be planted on 1 hectare of land. The distance from one hole to another is around four meters, while the diameter and depth of the hole is around 40 cm. These things must be considered for the growth of the coffee,” he said.

According to him, the coffee developed by the Tanjungsari PPN Vocational School students was named Bojingseungit Coffee. Apart from learning to plant, the students also learned the history of coffee in Sumedang.

“There are still many coffee trees here that are decades old or equivalent to the age of this school which was founded around 1914. When I was still in middle school, these coffee trees already existed. Previously, this area, before many settlements, was a coffee and tea plantation. From history “They are studying coffee in depth,” he explained.

This annual coffee tree grows around the Tanjungsari PPN Vocational School complex. He added that the students used the coffee trees to practice picking coffee.

“It’s impossible for them to continue planting the coffee plants they planted and bear fruit straight away, so they learned to pick coffee from these trees, even though they are old, they are still productive and bear fruit,” he added.

Not only harvest, post-harvest is also like a nursery, the seeds come from these coffee trees. “The seeds also develop themselves,” he concluded.
