Indonesia is known as a country rich in collections culinary typically. From Sabang to Merauke, almost every region has its own special dishes.
The unique taste leaves an impression on those who taste it. Rich in spices, it also supports Indonesian people to explore creating unique flavors.
Page Taste Atlas has just released a list of the tastiest foods in Indonesia. What’s on the list?
1. Siomay
Siomay comes from Chinese, ‘shumai‘. This food is believed to have originated from Chinese immigrants who came to Indonesia during the Dutch colonial period.
Popular with Indonesians, siomay consists of steamed fish dumplings, eggs, cabbage, tofu and bitter melon. Served on a plate, the filling is coated with thick peanut sauce.
To get a delicious taste, dumplings are usually added with a little soy sauce and chili sauce. The final touch, add the lime drippings.
2. Soto Betawi
This soup, which consists of pieces of meat and offal, is served warm in coconut milk sauce. Soto Betawi is rich in flavor, the sauce is a mixture of spices such as lemongrass, turmeric, galangal, lime leaves and coriander.
As the name suggests, this soto comes from the Betawi ethnic community who mostly live in the Jakarta area. This dish is easy to find from roadside stalls to five-star restaurants.
This food is usually served with tomatoes, spring onions, sweet soy sauce and emping crackers. Don’t forget, the addition of white rice and pickles can add to the enjoyment.
3. Pempek

This food, native to Palembang, South Sumatra, is a traditional fish preparation made from ground fish meat and tapioca. Pempek emerged because ancient Palembang residents were bored of eating fried or grilled fish.
They began to innovate by grinding fish with tapioca and then frying it.
Pempek will be steamed first then fried and served. Pempek will be served with noodles, cucumber slices and cuko sauce.
4. Rawon
Another delicious food in Indonesia is rawon. Taste Atlas wrote that rawon is made from traditional ingredients such as lime leaves, lemongrass, ginger and chili.
However, the key to the blackish rawon sauce is keluak, a typical Indonesian black bean.
Keluak must be fermented first before consumption. The reason is, keluak can be very poisonous and contain cyanide.
The keluak is then pounded together with other spices to produce a blackish sauce with a distinctive taste.
Rawon is a typical dish from Surabaya, East Java.
5. Batagor
These fried fish dumplings are the most famous snack in Indonesia. Batagor comes from Chinese culinary traditions.
The appearance of batagor reminds us of Chinese dumplings like dumplings. The difference is that batagor is fried, not steamed.
For Sundanese people, batagor itself is an acronym for fried tofu meatballs.
Batagor usually uses tuna, mackerel and a mixture of shrimp. Batagor is also served with potatoes, tofu or cabbage.
Don’t forget, coat the batagor with peanut sauce, add chili sauce, and add enough lime juice.
6. Chicken porridge
This breakfast menu originally came from Chinese rice porridge. However, the Indonesian version of chicken porridge creates an authentic dish. As the name suggests, porridge is served with shredded chicken and delicious additional spices.
You can boil the chicken until cooked then use the chicken cooking stock as water to make porridge.
7. Shrimp paste

The chili sauce menu is rarely found in other countries. Sambal terasi itself is a traditional Indonesian chili sauce made with a combination of red chilies and shrimp paste as the main ingredients.
Terasi chili sauce is made from garlic, shallots, tomatoes, lime juice, oil, salt and a little extra sugar.
