KOMPAS.com – The beginning of the year is usually durian season. There are starting to be lots of durian sellers on the side of the road whose aroma is appetizing.
Choosing a durian that is legit and has lots of flesh is not easy, especially if you have to take it home.
Many people choose to enjoy durian at sellers because they usually provide a guarantee.

If the durian is not ripe or does not taste good, buyers can exchange it for a better one.
However, bringing durian home without quality assurance often makes buyers wary.
Characteristics of good durian
According to the Chairman of the Durian Nusantara Foundation, Mohamad Reza Tirtawinata, there are several ways to ensure you get the best durian:
1. The stem is uneven
Delicious durian usually falls from the tree naturally, not picked. Pay attention to the durian stalk, if the surface is uneven, it means the durian fell by itself. However, if the stalk looks flat, it is likely that the durian was picked prematurely.
2. The shape is round
Round durian usually has more flesh than oval durian. The oval shape means the skin takes up more space so there is less meat.

Reza explained that round durian tends to have a meat portion of above 30 percent. An example is the Montong durian.
3. The lower end of the durian is still tightly closed
The bottom of the durian also needs attention. If the bottom skin looks cracked or split, you should avoid the durian. Choose one that is still close.

Air entering through these gaps can affect the taste, making the durian flesh tasteless or less sweet.
4. There is an inward echo sound when hit
To make sure the durian is ripe, hit the durian with a knife. If the durian makes an inward sound, it means the durian flesh is ripe and tender. On the other hand, if the sound bounces out, it is likely that the durian is still unripe.
5. The aroma is strong
Ripe durian gives off a pungent aroma. Conversely, if the aroma is still faint, choose another durian. Aroma is one of the main indicators of durian ripeness.

6. Not too heavy
We are usually tempted to buy large and heavy durians because we think the flesh will be thick and satisfying to eat.

However, it turns out that small durians, weighing around 1-2 kilograms, usually have evenly cooked flesh compared to large durians. The taste of the meat is also likely to be more consistent.
7. The spines are long and dense
The shape of the durian spines can also be a clue. Durians with wide, sparse spines tend to have drier flesh.
On the other hand, durian with long, dense spines usually has meat that is moister and not dry.
