Pepper X has a spiciness level of 2,693,000SHU. The level of spiciness of this Scoville far exceeds that of the Carolina Reaper which has a degree of spiciness of 1.64 million SHU.

Pepper X was grown by Ed Currie, founder of the Puckerbutt Pepper Company from America. Previously, he also created and held the record for the hottest chili, the Carolina Reaper.

The Carolina Reaper is the hottest chili in the world with an average Scoville Heat Unit (SHU) value of 1,641,183. This record was confirmed by Guinness World Records in 2017, based on tests conducted at Winthrop University, South Carolina.

Until now, the Carolina Reaper still holds the record as the hottest chili in the world. This chili was cultivated by farmer Ed Currie in America.

Due to its extreme level of spiciness, workers handling the Carolina Reaper must wear two layers of gloves to protect themselves from the chili oil which can ‘eat’ the latex.

3. Trinidad Scorpion Butch Chili T: 1,463,700 SHU

The second hottest chili in the world is the Trinidad Scorpion Butch T. This chili held the first position in March 2011, before being finally beaten by the Carolina Reaper. Grown in Australia, the strength of the spicy flavor of Trinidad Scorpion Butch T is likely influenced by the use of ‘fluid runoff from worm farms’ as fertilizer.

This fertilizer, known as ‘worm juice’, contains nutrients, plant growth hormones, as well as chitin from dead insects, which helps stimulate the plant’s natural defense system.

Next in the list of the hottest chilies in the world is the Naga Viper which has an average value of 1,382,118. This chili grown in England was also the hottest chili in the world in 2011.

The Trinidad Moruga Scorpion chili pepper, grown in Trinidad and Tobago, has an average SHU rating of 1.2 million. The spiciness of this chili is so extreme that the burning sensation in the mouth and throat can last for at least 8 minutes.
