6 Foods and Drinks That Have the Potential to Trigger Cancer
Some of the following foods and drinks may taste delicious, but they can have a negative impact on the body. If you want your body to be healthier and live longer, immediately limit and avoid consuming some of these cancer-triggering foods on a regular basis. The following is the list, quoted from the Healthline page:
1. Sugar and Processed Carbohydrates
In an article reviewed by Katherine Marengo LDN, RD, Nutrition, there are more and more foods with sugar and processed carbohydrates. The characteristic taste that is too sweet is said to have the potential to increase the possibility of cancer.
For example, drinks with a high sweetener content, foods that are cooked too long, processed foods such as pasta, bread and cereals are also foods that may now be known as ultra processed food (UPF). It is food that has been processed with foreign ingredients such as chemicals, preservatives, colorings, salt and excess sugar.
Consuming starchy foods with high concentrations and sweets can put you at greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes and obesity. According to a 2020 study, the condition promotes inflammation and stress. This may increase the risk for certain types of cancer.
Foods that trigger type 2 diabetes increase the risk of ovarian, breast and endometrial (uterine) cancer. So, to limit this, you can consume healthier alternative foods such as brown rice, bread made from gluten-free flour, and other minimally processed real food foods.
2. Processed Meat
Who doesn’t like processed meat? We are very close to this type of food, such as sausages and nuggets, which are practical and can fill you up quickly. The delicious taste also helps when you don’t have much time to cook, but want to eat well.
In fact, processed meat consists of only a small percentage of meat, added with preservatives and lots of flour and other foreign ingredients. The methods used to make processed meat can create carcinogens.
Consuming high amounts of processed meat is associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. It turns out that these processed foods are said to be very fast in triggering the risk of developing cancer cells.
This is due to the addition of preservatives which are intended to make food products last longer. Apart from that, the smoking process and the addition of salt to processed meat are also too excessive.
3. Alcohol
Alcohol can interfere with your immune function, making it difficult for the body to target precancerous and cancerous cells. In women, alcohol increases estrogen levels in the body and has a higher risk of triggering breast cancer.
For drinkers, alcohol is often associated with drinks that help the body to relax. However, nutritionist at the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF), Matthew Lambert, explained that alcohol has no positive relationship to the body. In fact, alcoholic drinks can cause at least six types of cancer.
4. Overcooked Food
Overcooking food can produce carcinogens. For example, if meat is cooked for too long, using a frying pan with unhealthy ingredients can also have an impact.
Cooking meat at high heat creates carcinogenic PAHs and heterocyclic amines (HCA). These substances can increase the risk of cancer by changing cell DNA. So to reduce the risk of carcinogens from cooking at high heat, you can use healthier cooking methods such as baking at a lower temperature or cooking slowly in a slow cooker.
5. Fried foods
Fried foods have always been Indonesian people’s favorite food companions. Eating fried foods is inherent in Indonesian habits. Fried chicken, fried fish, bala-bala, and snacks such as fried cassava or risol are never absent from Indonesian life.
However, using oil to fry food can increase saturated fat deposition in the human body. Moreover, this oil has been used for frying many times. When there is too much saturated fat, there is a threat of at least 13 types of cancer developing in the human body.
6. All Foods UPF
The American Institute for Cancer Research and the American Cancer Society, that a lifestyle of avoiding ultra-processed foods (UPF) is the key to preventing cancer.
Consuming food that is not much processed or real food, such as vegetables, fruit, meat cooked using real cooking methods and spices, is the safest and healthiest food. The key is to consume ingredients that come from nature and not those made in factories.
The average American consumes at least 63% ultraprocessed foods such as pizza, chips, muffins, processed meats, and sweetened drinks. Cancer studies show that ultraprocessed foods not only increase the risk of developing cancer, but after a cancer diagnosis, they increase the risk of death.
Research shows that the best step is to avoid these foods. Sources of protein can be obtained from foods such as tofu, edamame, tempeh, fish, chicken and nuts.
So, that’s a list of 6 cancer-triggering foods that experts don’t recommend. Let’s live healthy, and stay away from foods that are bad for the body!
