5 Foods and Drinks that Gout Sufferers Should Avoid

High uric acid levels are a disease that many urban residents suffer from. Therefore, food and drink intake needs to be selected so that it doesn’t get worse.

Gout is a disease caused by foods high in purine which causes pain due to the formation of uric acid crystals in the joints.

Apart from medication to reduce asthma urate levels, sufferers also need to maintain their diet. One way is to avoid foods and drinks high in purines.
Here are 5 foods and drinks that gout sufferers need to avoid.

1. Seafood

A number of seafood are known to contain high purine substances, one of which is fish. The types of fish that gout sufferers should avoid are anchovies, cod, haddock, herring, mackerel, mussels, fish eggs, sardines, scallops and trout.

Apart from fish, seafood, such as crab, lobster, oysters and shrimp, you should also be wary of because they contain purines, even in moderate amounts.

Red meat, such as beef, lamb and pork, is on the list of foods that gout sufferers should avoid because they contain high levels of purine.
As an alternative, gout sufferers can consume white poultry meat or vegetable protein sources, such as soybeans which can be found in tempeh and tofu.

3. Offal

Offal, such as liver and tongue, is one of the favorite foods of Indonesian people. Apparently, this food is not recommended for gout sufferers because it contains high levels of purine compounds.

Bread is a source of carbohydrates which is often used as an alternative to rice to fill energy. Apart from that, bread is often used as a choice for breakfast.
However, it turns out that processed carbohydrates, such as white bread, pastries and cakes can cause blood sugar to spike so they are not good for gout sufferers.

Honey contains high fructose, a natural sweetener that releases purines when they break down in the body. Researchers report that there is a correlation between high-fructose foods and gout symptoms.

Therefore, limit drinks or foods that contain fructose to a minimum to stop or reduce gout attacks.
