Chicory grows in the wild under the Latin name cichorium Intybus, reports Healthline. This plant has hard, hairy stems, and has light purple flowers and leaves.

Usually chicory is used as a salad mixture. Apart from that, it has often been used as herbal medicine since ancient times. There are also those who brew this plant like coffee.

Chicory coffee is made from the roots of the chicory plant which are roasted, ground, then brewed. Even though it is not made from coffee beans, this drink tastes like coffee.

The taste is woody, nutty and slightly spicy. This chicory can be brewed whole or can also be mixed with coffee to complement the taste. This drink could be a solution to reduce caffeine intake.

Reporting from Healthline, one 60 gram raw chicory root can contain 44 calories, 0.8 grams of protein, 10.5 grams of carbohydrates, 0.1 grams of fat and 0.9 grams of fiber.

2. Created to overcome the coffee crisis

Chicory coffee was first created as a solution to overcome the coffee crisis in France. At that time, people experienced a shortage of coffee beans, which made people look for similar substitutes.

Initially they mixed plant roots into ground coffee to improve the quality of the existing coffee. Innovations then developed during the Civil War making coffee a popular trend in New Orleans.
