Food that quickly spoil or lose nutrients should be consumed immediately or stored in the right way to avoid waste and health risks. Moreover, most of the food stored in the kitchen has an expiration date.
It’s a good idea to pay attention to the items in your kitchen and get rid of those that shouldn’t be there. This will definitely help your food remain consumable.
Here are 10 foods that shouldn’t be kept in the kitchen for too long as reported by Star Insider, Saturday (29/6/2024).
10 Foods That Should Not Be Kept Too Long in the Kitchen
1. Cereal
An open box of cereal will go stale from exposure to air after three months, but a tightly closed box will last up to a year. This may vary if it contains nuts that are prone to rancidity.
2. Nuts and Seeds
Nuts and seeds contain a lot of oil, and the oil will start to go rancid after a few months. To keep them fresh and long-lasting, place them in a clear plastic bag for storing nuts and store them in the refrigerator for up to one year.
3. Dried Spices
Dried spices are something people keep forever, but they shouldn’t. The problem is not food safety, but rather quality, because the intensity and taste will be lost due to rancidity.
4. Baking Powder and Baking Soda
Baking powder and baking soda will lose their leavening power over time, which will result in a sad cake. So make sure your ingredients are fresh before using.
