The bad stigma about goat meat in society arises from several inappropriate views and beliefs. The following are some of the stigmas that often arise and the explanations that accompany them.
Increases Blood Pressure
Stigma: Many people believe consuming goat meat can significantly increase blood pressure.
Explanation: A scientific report in 2014 published in the Asian-Australasian Journal of Animal Sciences by Sunagawa et al showed that goat meat does not trigger hypertension. In a 14 week experiment, the blood pressure of mice fed goat meat with a salt content of 0.3% was almost the same as the control group fed chicken meat. However, the way you cook it, such as using a lot of salt or high-fat ingredients, can affect blood pressure.
Unpleasant Odor
Stigma: Goat meat has a smell prengus (distinctive odor) that is unpleasant.
Explanation: The distinctive smell of goat meat can be overcome by cooking it using spices and proper processing techniques. Choosing fresh meat also helps reduce unpleasant odors.
Difficult to Digest
Stigma: Goat meat is difficult to digest and can cause digestive problems.
Explanation: Any red meat has a longer digestion time than vegetables or grains. However, goat meat is no more difficult to digest than other red meats if consumed in reasonable quantities and cooked well.
Triggers High Cholesterol
Stigma: Goat meat is thought to increase cholesterol levels in the body.
Explanation: Goat meat actually has lower fat and cholesterol content than beef or pork. Eating reasonable amounts and choosing leaner cuts of meat can help maintain cholesterol levels.
Causes of Gout (Gout)
Stigma: Goat meat is associated with an increased risk of gout.
Explanation: Although goat meat contains purines which can affect uric acid levels, as with other red meats, this risk can be minimized by consuming moderate amounts and balanced with a healthy diet.
Sources of Unhealthy Fats
Stigma: Goat meat is considered a source of unhealthy fat.
Explanation: The fat content in goat meat is lower than other red meats. Choosing healthy cooking methods, such as grilling or boiling, can help maintain the nutritional benefits of meat without adding excess fat.
Overcoming these stigmas requires disseminating accurate information regarding the nutritional value and proper processing of goat meat. With better understanding, people can enjoy the benefits of goat meat without worrying about unfounded stigma.
