Rome – In Italy, lunch is not just a routine, but an important part of culture. One of the unique ways of Romans considering that lunch time is the boom of a cannon on Bukit Gianicolo, a tradition that has lasted for more than 150 years.
Every day exactly at 12.00 noon, a Howitzer cannon, nicknamed “the Monster”, was fired by the Italian special forces. This tradition began in 1847, when Pope Pius IX ordered the use of cannons as a marker of time, because church bells in Rome are often not in harmony.
Bukit Gianicolo itself is a popular tourist destination, offering a view of Rome from a height before tourists witness the iconic moment of cannon. The sound of an explosion that echoed throughout the city marked the time for Romans to stop for a moment and enjoy lunch.
The thump of cannon in Gianicolo is not only a tradition, but also a historical heritage that continues to be maintained and becomes the identity of the city of Rome. (Gede Satria/Dwinarto)
