Reasons to Avoid Eating Spicy During Ramadan Fasting


Kompas.com – Eating spicy food at dawn and breaking the fast of Ramadan can have a negative impact on health, especially in the digestive system.

Spicy food is known to stimulate the production of stomach acid, cause discomfort, and increase the risk of digestive disorders such as gastritis and dyspepsia.

During fasting, the stomach is empty in a long time. When breaking the fast, eating spicy food directly can worsen the condition of the stomach that is not ready to receive heavy food.

This is at risk of causing the stomach to feel sore, hot heat, can even trigger stomach acid.

Digestion becomes more sensitive during fasting

Clinical Nutrition Specialist Verawati Sudarma explained that the digestive tract when fasting becomes more sensitive to spicy food.

This sensitivity can cause various indigestion that has the potential to disrupt the smooth running of fasting.

“Spicy food stimulates the production of stomach acid, and this causes uncomfortable feelings, especially in people who are not accustomed to eating spicy,” said Dr. Verawati Sudarma.

How to reduce the negative impact of spicy food during fasting

In order to still be able to enjoy spicy food without causing indigestion, there are some things that can be done, including:

1. Limit the level of spiciness

Consumption of spicy foods in reasonable quantities and in accordance with their respective body tolerance.

2. Combine with other foods

Avoid eating excessive spicy foods without balanced with other foods that are lighter for the stomach, such as vegetables and protein.

3. Drink lots of water

Water can help neutralize the effects of spicy foods and prevent dehydration during fasting.

4. Avoid spicy foods at dawn

Eating spicy foods at dawn can increase stomach acid production throughout the day and at risk of causing digestive disorders during fasting.

Although spicy food has many fans, you should consume these foods limited during the fasting month to maintain the health of the digestive system.
