Is it OK to drink coffee before eating?
The answer to the question above actually depends on each individual’s body condition.
However, it is often recommended to eat first before drinking coffee. Because, as reported by Real SimpleTuesday (21/1/2025), drinking coffee on an empty stomach can cause stomach ache.
“Coffee can stimulate the production of stomach acid which can cause stomach ache or symptoms of gastric acid reflux,” said registered nutritionist and sustainable food systems expert, Christina Manian, quoted from Real Simple.

Apart from that, drinking coffee on an empty stomach is also said to cause stress. This is because coffee can stimulate the production of cortisol, a stress hormone in the body.
“While some cortisol is important for the regulation of blood sugar, blood pressure, and metabolism, excessive amounts over long periods of time can lead to hypertension, unregulated blood sugar levels that can potentially lead to diabetes, and loss of bone density,” explains Manian.
However, of course there are people who are still fine even if they drink coffee before eating.
Quoted from Healthlineif you experience digestive problems after drinking coffee on an empty stomach, but don’t experience them when drinking coffee after meals, consider adjusting your intake.
