FKUI Family Medical Study Program Lecturer Dr. Marinda Asiah Nuril Haya, Mmed SCI, PhD said, coffee can make us urinate more often. This is because the diuretic nature in caffeine which makes coffee more can trigger urine production that tends to be more. So that the body more often wants to urinate.
When fasting fluids continue to decrease, so drinking coffee can cause a large risk of dehydration. The nature of the booster that coffee has can be accepted by the body. Even so, the body will also release a lot of fluids within a few hours.
“Maybe the caffeine effect can stay for a few hours, but after that the effect of urinating actually makes it limp lack of fluids and dehydration. Therefore it should be avoided,” said Dr. Nuril.
When should drink coffee in the fasting month?
During the fasting month, coffee should be consumed when breaking the fast. That is, coffee connoisseurs must shift a little time consumption of favorite drinks that are usually done in the morning.
In this way, liquids that might come out after drinking coffee can be replaced immediately. Fasting coffee connoisseurs do not need to be dehydrated and weak during worship.
For those who still want to consume coffee at dawn, Dr. Nuril appealed to ensure the adequacy of water in the body. Adequacy of water consumption can overcome the effects of coffee diuretics.
“So when the dawn drinks about two glasses of water. Then later when you open one glass of water, one glass after the Maghrib prayer. Then from Isha until the meal can be three to four glasses, so that the liquid needs are still met,” said Dr. Nuril.
In addition to shifting coffee drinking time, another way is to reduce the amount of daily consumption. Clinical nutrition doctor Dr. Tirta Prawita Sari, MSc, SPGK, exemplified, if you used to drink two spoonfuls of coffee then when the fasting month becomes one spoonful. This is to reduce the risk of dehydration and digestive health problems.
