Kompas.com – Boyolali Regency does not have a large tea garden, such as in Kemuning, Ngargoyoso, Karanganyar Regency, Central Java.
However, it turns out Boyolali also has a tea -producing area, namely in Hamlet Kayulawang, Mriyan Village, Tamansari District.
Kompas.com had visited directly to Kayulawang on Wednesday (2/19/2025) and enjoyed the tea produced by the Sekartaji group.

While in Hamlet Kayulawang, there is no visible large tea garden, like in other areas.
However, tea farmers from the Sekartaji farmer group named Agus Sumanto immediately served tea with a distinctive aroma, namely Sangit or Burned.
This tea can be enjoyed with a sweet taste through additional sugar, to the bitter which is pure water and tea. Everything is adjusted to taste. The name of the product is tea piles.

“The tea after being harvested and dried in the sun, then roasted (fried without oil) to reduce the water content,” he told Kompas.com In Kayulawang, Wednesday.

He continued, the roasting process is also unique, which must use firewood stoves and roastal bases from pottery.
“If you use a gas stove or metal Teflon, you can’t. The taste and aroma will be different, “continued Sumanto.

According to him, this roasting technique has been carried out for generations from grandparents and parents of the local community.
Dutch heritage tea
Sumanto explained, the area used to be a fairly large tea producing area with many gardens and tea plants.
“Previously in the Dutch era, this area was a tea factory. The location is in the Mbabrik market to the north, around there, “he said.
