The tradition of the Banjar samin porridge in the Darussalam Mosque in Solo, has been around since 1986


Kompas.com – Every Ramadan, the courtyard of the Darussalam Mosque in the city of Solo, Central Java, is always filled with residents who are waiting for the dishes of the samin porridge typical of Banjar, South Kalimantan.

This samin porridge is usually distributed in the afternoon after the Asar prayer, and as a menu for breaking the fast.

The tradition of sharing Samin porridge has been going on since 1986 and returned to Ramadan 2025 by preparing 1,300 portions for free every day.

The warmth of this tradition not only presents a distinctive taste, but also strengthens the rope of togetherness in the community.

To maintain the sustainability of this tradition, the Solo City Government has contributed over the past three years by supplying 1.5 tons of rice every Ramadan.

This assistance ensures the availability of raw materials, so that the mosque management can focus more on the cooking process and maintain the quality of Samin porridge which has become a culinary icon of Ramadan in Solo.

The process of cooking samin porridge which is full of meaning

Every day, as many as 1,100 servings of Samin porridge are provided for the general public, while 200 other portions are specifically for local residents.

There is no coupon system in division, so anyone who comes early can immediately enjoy this dish.

The cooking process began at 11:30 WIB by preparing an impromptu kitchen in the mosque’s yard.

The mosque administrator first made a broth from beef and meat, before processing 45-50 kilograms of rice which began to be cooked after zuhr. Within 2-3 hours, Samin Porridge is ready to be distributed to residents after the Asar prayer.

Ramadan religious tourism in the city of Solo

The Mayor of Solo, Respati Ardi, plans to make the tradition of sharing Samin porridge as a Ramadan tourist destination.

This plan emerged after the samin porridge distribution activity on Saturday (1/3/2025). With its unique taste and uniqueness, this tradition is considered to have great potential to attract tourists.

As part of the development of religious tourism, the Solo City Government will increase production capacity and increase promotion so that the Samin porridge tradition is increasingly widely known.
