So why is consuming popsicles recommended when sick?

Popsicles help with hydration

Ensuring the body gets enough water and electrolytes is important, especially when sick. Hydration is important to ensure the body is not affected by fluid loss due to vomiting or sweating.

However, drinking mineral water when you are sick doesn’t taste good. This is where popsicles come into play. Consuming it can help hydrate the body in a fun way.

Soto reminded that cases of dehydration are more likely to occur in children where they do not eat and drink enough. “Eating popsicles gives them fluid intake and helps reduce the risk of dehydration,” said Soto.

Popsicles are a ‘comfort food’ for many people. It tastes sweet, delicious, and often makes people feel nostalgic, which ultimately creates a feeling of joy when someone eats it.

“When we are sick, feeling joy and pleasure is beneficial for emotional and physical health,” explains Storch. He adds, “The stress of worrying about the sugar content in popsicles actually causes more inflammation, which weakens your immune system’s ability to fight disease.

Soto added that it is important for parents to provide physical and emotional comfort when their child is sick. These two factors can be fulfilled through consuming popsicles.

“Popsicles are made from frozen water or juice, but they are more fun to eat than in liquid form,” says nutritionist Beth Rosen.

Physically calming

Experts assess that popsicles can provide the physical comfort needed. For example, symptoms of a sore throat, discomfort, or coughing when sick. “Popsicles help relieve these symptoms,” said Soto.

Popsicles are also good to consume when you have a fever, feel hot or uncomfortable. Even when your mouth feels dry, consuming popsicles can also be an option according to Rosen.

This occurs when a person often has to breathe through the mouth because of a blocked nose. The taste is definitely unpleasant and apparently it can be overcome by consuming popsicles.
