Choosing sweet rambutans does require a little carefulness.
There are several simple tricks that you can practice to ensure that the rambutan you buy tastes legit and fresh, as reported on the page Kompas.com which aired on Tuesday (29/12/2020) below.
1. Pay attention to the type
Not all types of rambutan taste the same. Neat hair.
For example, it is characterized by green skin and small size, but has a sweet, sticky taste with flesh that does not stick to the seeds.
In contrast, Binjai and Aceh rambutans are larger in size and have a wetter flesh texture.
Understanding these types of rambutan helps you choose one that suits your taste.
2. Choose Local Rambutan
Local rambutan often has a more authentic taste because it is harvested fresh from nearby gardens.
Examples of local varieties such as pirba, walahar, or lebak bulus rambutan have a distinctive taste and are often sweeter than imported rambutan.
Apart from supporting local farmers, these rambutans tend to be fresher.
3. Choose rambutan that is yellowish green
Sweet rambutans are not always bright red.
According to researchers at the Center for Tropical Horticultural Studies, IPB, Prof. Dr. Sobir, a rambutan with a yellowish green color, like the cipelat variety, often has a distinctive sweet taste.
Avoid rambutan that is too red because it may taste less sweet and too ripe.
4. Pay attention to intact skin
Good rambutan skin must be intact and have no gaps.
