How and When is the Best Time to Take Vitamins?

But the body can absorb some nutrients better if you consume them with foods that contain fat.

Some vitamins are better absorbed under special conditions, which is why it’s a good idea to know how and when to take supplements to promote optimal absorption.

1. Water-soluble vitamins

Water-soluble vitamins are not easily stored in the body, so you must consume them regularly to maintain healthy levels.

Water-soluble nutrients can be consumed with or without food and at any time of the day.

2. Vitamin C

You can take vitamin C supplements at any time of the day, with or without food.

Although consuming ascorbic acid with food may help reduce potential gastrointestinal side effects caused by its high acidity.

Be sure to store vitamin C supplements in a cool, dark place, as this nutrient is sensitive to heat and light.

3. Vitamin A

Most vitamin A supplements come from fish liver oil or in the form of vitamin A carotenoids, which are plant compounds that the body converts into the active form of vitamin A.

To increase optimal absorption, you should take vitamin A supplements with foods that contain fat.

4. Vitamin D

Vitamin D can be taken at any time of the day, and most of these supplements should be taken with a meal or snack containing fat to ensure optimal absorption.

However, there are some oil- and microsome-based vitamin Ds packaged in fatty acid balls, which can be consumed without food.

5. Vitamin E

It is usually recommended that vitamin E supplements be taken with food. However, a study found that as long as fatty foods were eaten throughout the day, vitamin E was absorbed effectively.

6. Vitamin K

You can take vitamin K supplements at any time of the day with a meal or snack that contains fat.

Because most people get enough vitamin K through their diet, it is not recommended to take high-dose supplements.

Unless your healthcare provider recommends doing so. Although these supplements are generally safe and not associated with significant side effects.
