What Happens If We Drink Stale Milk?

KOMPAs.com – Have you ever drank milk that was past its expiration date or considered drinking it even though it smelled strange?

Here is important information you need to know about spoiled milk.

Unrefrigerated milk

Unrefrigerated milk has a much greater risk of spoiling. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), milk that is left at room temperature for more than 2 hours may not be safe to drink.

If the environmental temperature is above 32 degrees Celsius, this time is reduced to only 1 hour.

Some signs of spoiled milk are:

  • Texture/color: Fresh milk is white and has a smooth texture. Stale milk tends to curdle, be thicker, and sometimes yellowish in color.
  • Smell: Stale milk has a sharp sour aroma, in contrast to fresh milk which is almost odorless.
  • Taste: Don’t try to taste milk that looks and smells strange. If you keep doing this, the taste will be sour and unpleasant.

The impact of drinking spoiled milk

Spoiled milk contains an overgrowth of bacteria, which can cause digestive problems if drunk in large quantities. Symptoms that may appear include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Nauseous
  • Vomit
  • Diarrhea

Most symptoms will disappear within 12-24 hours. During this period, be sure to drink fluids, especially those containing electrolytes, and rest. If symptoms worsen, contact a doctor immediately.

Although you should never drink spoiled milk, milk that is only slightly sour can still be used in cooking.

For example, for baking quick bread, cakes, or marinating meat. However, make sure the milk is not moldy or shows signs of serious spoilage.
