Foods to Lower Blood Sugar, Just in Time for New Year’s Eve


KOMPAS.com -Celebrating New Year’s Eve is usually done with a banquet.

However, it would be better if we eat healthy foods that can lower blood sugar, especially for diabetes sufferers.

Several foods are known to be effective in helping regulate blood sugar levels. Here is the list:

1. Broccoli

Broccoli contains sulforaphane, a compound shown to have blood sugar-lowering properties. Research shows that sulforaphane-rich broccoli extract can improve insulin sensitivity and reduce oxidative stress.

To get maximum benefits, consume broccoli raw or lightly steamed.

2. Seafood

Fish and seafood are rich in protein, healthy fats, and vitamins and minerals. Protein helps slow digestion, prevents blood sugar spikes after meals, and increases feelings of fullness.

Fatty fish such as salmon and sardines can also improve blood sugar regulation.

3. Pumpkin and pumpkin seeds

Pumpkin contains fiber and antioxidants which are good for regulating blood sugar. Pumpkin extract and powder are known to lower blood sugar levels, while pumpkin seeds which are rich in healthy fats and protein help manage blood sugar after meals.

4. Nuts and peanut butter

Various types of nuts, such as almonds and peanuts, can help lower blood sugar.

5. Flax seeds

6. Chia seeds

Chia seeds are rich in fiber and antioxidants. Consuming chia seeds can help increase insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugar levels after eating.

9. Avocado

Avocados are rich in healthy fats, fiber and other nutrients that can help manage blood sugar.
