Myths and facts about peanuts and gout

Gout or gout is a form of arthritis caused by a buildup of excess uric acid in the blood. When uric acid levels are too high, sharp, needle-shaped crystals can form and stick in the joints, causing pain and soreness.

Many believe that peanuts can trigger this disease. However, peanuts actually do not trigger gout if consumed in moderation.

In fact, peanuts are included in the list of foods recommended for gout sufferers.

Purine content of peanuts

Uric acid is formed when the body breaks down purines, natural substances found in the body and some types of food.

After being broken down, uric acid is usually excreted in urine. However, in some conditions, uric acid cannot be excreted completely, so it accumulates in the blood and causes gout pain.

Foods high in purine are taboo for gout sufferers. However, peanuts are classified as a low-purine food, with a purine content of only around 49 milligrams per 100 grams.

For comparison, almonds contain 31 milligrams per 100 grams, and walnuts only 25 milligrams per 100 grams. This figure is well below the 100 milligram limit which is considered low in purines.

Benefits of peanuts for gout sufferers

Apart from being low in purines, peanuts have various health benefits. Nuts, including peanuts, are rich in vitamins, minerals, protein and healthy fats.

Peanuts can also be an alternative source of protein for gout sufferers who need to reduce their consumption of red meat.

A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2016) states that peanuts contain anti-inflammatory properties that help prevent inflammation and painful gout attacks.

Another study in the Nutrition Journal (2015) found that consuming nuts such as almonds can reduce uric acid levels.
