The issue of allergen content in Indomie in Australia, what are the rules in Indonesia?


KOMPAS.com – Australia withdrew four variants of Indomie brand instant noodles from the market because they did not include allergen content information on the packaging.

Reported Kompas.comThursday (19/12/2024), the noodle variants withdrawn from the market in Australia are Mie Goreng Aceh, Soto Mie flavor, Chicken Onion flavor, and Rendang flavor.

The Australia-New Zealand Food Standards Agency (FSANZ) said the withdrawal was carried out because Indomie did not include information on the allergen content of shrimp, fish, milk and eggs on the packaging of the four products.

In fact, it is important to include this information so that consumers who have allergies or intolerances do not consume it. So what are the rules in Indonesia?

In Indonesia, the rules regarding the inclusion of allergen information are regulated in the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) Regulation Number 31 of 2018 concerning Processed Food Labels, especially in Part Six which discusses information about Allergens.

1. Mandatory inclusion of allergens on labels

  • Article 49 Paragraph (1): Information about allergens must be included on the label of products containing allergens.
  • Paragraph (2): Products that use the same production facility as the product containing the allergen must also include information about the possibility of allergen contamination.
  • Paragraph (3): Types of allergens that must be included include cereals that contain gluten (for example wheat, barley, rye), eggs, fish, shrimp, lobster, clams and other mollusks. Then, peanuts, soybeans, tree nuts (almonds, hazelnuts, pistachios, and others), milk, including lactose, and sulfites in certain concentrations.

2. Special information on the label

  • Article 51 Paragraph (1): Allergens must be stated explicitly in the list of ingredients in bold, and accompanied by a warning, such as “Contains allergens, see list of ingredients in bold.”
  • Paragraph (2): If there is potential for allergen contamination during the production process, the label must contain warnings, such as “Manufactured using equipment that also processes…”, “May contain…”, and “May contain…”.

3. Exceptions in the inclusion of allergens

  • Article 50: Food products that have gone through a refining process (highly refined food)such as soybean oil or fish gelatin, may be exempt from allergen listing requirements because they have been processed to the point that they no longer contain the allergenic protein.
