8 Foods You Shouldn’t Eat During Chinese New Year, What Are They?

However, apart from choosing foods that bring good luck, there are several foods that you should never eat during Chinese New Year because they are believed to bring bad luck.

This tradition has been passed down from generation to generation by the Chinese people and has a deep meaning behind it.

Some types of food are not avoided without reason.

The symbolism of the color, shape, or way the food is served is the main reason why these foods are not recommended during Chinese New Year celebrations.

2. Porridge

Porridge is often considered a symbol of hardship or poverty. The soft and watery texture of the porridge is considered to symbolize someone living in difficult economic conditions. Porridge is the main taboo in Chinese New Year dishes.

3. Lobsters

The movement of a lobster swimming backwards is believed to symbolize decline in life. Eating lobster during the Chinese New Year is thought to bring about a life that goes backwards and is full of difficulties in the new year.

4. White Food

Chicken wings are thought to make a person’s luck “fly away” from them. Consuming this part during Chinese New Year is believed to bring bad luck in the future.

6. Pumpkin

The pronunciation of the word “gourd” in Chinese is similar to the word meaning “death.” Therefore, pumpkins are avoided during Chinese New Year celebrations so as not to bring bad things to the family.

7. Crab

The crab has a sideways walk which symbolizes a lack of progress in life. Therefore, this food is considered taboo to consume when celebrating Chinese New Year.

8. Food that is too spicy

Dishes that are too spicy are often associated with heat or unstable emotions. In Chinese tradition, avoiding spicy food during Chinese New Year is believed to bring calm and harmony throughout the year.
