5 Differences Between Ketoprak and Betawi Gado-Gado


KOMPAS.com – Ketoprak and gado-gado are two traditional Indonesian dishes that both use peanut sauce as their characteristic.

Even though they look similar, they both have significant differences in ingredients, taste, and presentation method that are interesting to discuss.

In Jakarta and its surroundings, ketoprak is usually better known as a snack, while gado-gado is often used as a main dish.

Knowing the difference between ketoprak and gado-gado not only broadens your knowledge, but also helps you choose a dish that suits your taste, as reported on the page Kompas.com which aired on Sunday (06/03/2022).

1. Use of Materials

Ketoprak usually uses main ingredients such as vermicelli, tofu, bean sprouts and ketupat.

Meanwhile, gado-gado tends to use more types of vegetables, such as cabbage, spinach, long beans, potatoes and corn.

Gado-gado is also often accompanied by boiled eggs and lontong as a complement.

2. Dish Texture

Ketoprak has a softer and lighter texture because it is dominated by vermicelli and tofu.

Meanwhile, gado-gado tends to be richer in texture because it contains various types of boiled vegetables which provide a fresh and crunchy sensation when eaten.

3. Taste

Ketoprak peanut sauce is more savory with a strong garlic aroma, giving it a different distinctive taste.

On the other hand, gado-gado peanut sauce has a distinctive kencur taste, creating a more complex blend of flavors and tends to be sweet.

4. Method of Presentation

Ketoprak is served with ketupat or lontong cut into small pieces, then sprinkled with peanut sauce and sprinkled with fried onions.

Gado-gado is usually served with boiled vegetables sprinkled with peanut sauce, then topped with crackers and lime juice for a fresh taste.

5. Popularity in Location

Ketoprak is easier to find as a street food in Jakarta, while gado-gado is also often available in traditional restaurants.

These two dishes offer deliciousness that is suitable to be enjoyed at any time, whether for breakfast or lunch.
